Fools Gold - quick, frivolous - I wanted a good groove and was looking to work in the D 6/9 passing chord within E minors – the unusual end of chorus choice for the flat 5th on the B just worked - and then during the lead it culminates with that modified G major run to the F. This one just has that real 70s warm groove space for slow unison break and patient minor lead break. Enough room for John to decorate the final verse with really a second lead. This was written in Jan 2024 - I think the lyrics came together at the same time. The band also needed a break from learning songs like Greigs and Sevens which ate a lot of our time in 2023/24 - we were playing 20+ shows practicing 40+ times and everyone was on point to practice as close to daily as possible. This was a break - where we could flow instantly with a nice easy groove, nothing complicated - it felt really good juxtaposed with some of the harder stuff. The lyrics were social reflection on slowing down, moments of clarity, time wasted online - with some non-sequitur lyrical reference - Sexy little dolls, Carbonara Cook, Postulating goals - lyrical word play.
